The Psychometric Function for Focusing Attention on Pitch

چکیده

What is the effect of focusing auditory attention on an upcoming signal tone? Weak tones, 40 ms in duration, were presented 50 dB continuous white noise and either uncued or cued 82 beforehand by a 12 SL cue tone same frequency duration as signal. Signal was constant for block trials randomly one 11 frequencies from 632 to 3140 Hz. Slopes psychometric functions detection single-interval (Yes/No) obtained three listeners varying level over 1–9 range. Plots log(d’) against fit linear functions. similar whether varied, found D. Green. tones increased 14% 20% more than predicted energy (i.e., 0.10), also previously, whereas slopes followed corrected 8 sensory threshold. That pre-cues help focus rapidly permit act near-ideal detectors energy, which they do not otherwise, supports key hypothesis Grossberg’s ART model that guided conscious awareness can optimize perception.

Distraction of attention and the slope of the psychometric function.

The influential uncertainty model [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 2, 1508 (1985)] attributes nonlinear contrast sensitivity near threshold to the inability of the observer to discriminate between the signal from stimulated locations and the noise from nonstimulated locations. We introduce an alternative interpretation, the distraction model, to describe the behavior of an observer who knows exactly which l...

Covert attention affects the psychometric function of contrast sensitivity

We examined the effect of transient covert attention on the psychometric function for contrast sensitivity in an orientation discrimination task when the target was presented alone in the absence of distracters and visual masks. Transient covert attention decreased both the threshold (consistent with a contrast gain mechanism) and, less consistently, the slope of the psychometric function. We a...

Focusing Attention on Visual Features that Matter

An indoor navigating agent needs to efficiently understand the geometric structure of its local environment in order to act. A common scene understanding approach is to generate a set of hypotheses about the geometric structure of the indoor environment and then test the hypotheses to select the one with the highest rank, from a single image [1, 4, 5, 6] or from a continuous stream of images (e...

Weber's law orthogonal to the psychometric function

Psychometric function plots the percentage of the correct responses among an entire pool of responses (cumulative probability) in a psychophysical task versus the amount of change in an independent variable. These changes in the independent variable are made with reference to a constant initial value. If this initial value is altered, the psychometric function will change according to Weber’s l...
